Akira Ifukube: “Godzilla Under The Sea”

Now here’s a real Typhonian piece of music, if ever there was one. This is from one of the most tragic and horrific scenes in the original 1954 version of Godzilla (and I explain why this scene is so disturbing in my review of that movie). Many film composers have tried their hands at scores for Godzilla epics, but none have ever done it so well as Akira Ifukube did (though Reijiro Koroku came damn close with the score for 1984’s The Return of Godzilla/Godzilla 1985, and Alexandre Desplat made an excellent contribution in last year’s phenomenal Godzilla reboot). People forget just how dark the original Godzilla is, however, and this unsettling track will serve as an appropriate reminder.
